    LARGE RUGS

LARGE RUGS, 6' x 4' or 180 x 120cm (approx). One of our key Cross Cultural projects, images from Australian Aboriginal artists are faithfully replicated, hand stitched onto cavas using hand dyed wool. Skills have been developed and honed over hundreds of years. The handicraft is called gabba. There is one remote region in Kashmir producing genuine gabba, crossing the border region of both Indian and Pakistani Kashmir. Copies of this craft are practiced in other places in India but skill levels are reduced and authetic quality are not present. The rugs have a non slip backing. They are also fitted with a hanging sleeve for hanging on a wall.

    ZALAKADOS - KASHMIRI ARTISANS

This beautiful old photo was taken in the late 1800s. The handicraft Gabba is an intergenerational skill, refined and perfected for hundreds of years by the artisans of a small region within the Kashmir valley. There are many skills and people involved in the making of a chainstitch rug, hand dying, drawing up the design, hand embroidering, are a few. The villages practicing this craft span the border region between India and Pakistan and is still practiced in both countries even though the Kashmiris are separated politically. Artisans gather and work together with their family near by. Income supliments rural income and the craft is practiced between sewing and harvest.
